What Is a
Cypher?
A cypher is a circle of dancers taking turns in the middle, to the music, one at a time. It's the heart of hip-hop dance — a conversation, not an audition.
01 · The basics
How the circle works
The DJ plays. People form a ring. Someone steps in, dances for a moment, and steps back out. Someone else goes. There's no sign-up list and no judges — the circle itself decides the flow.
02 · Etiquette
The unwritten rules
Wait for the middle to clear before you enter. Keep your turn short enough to share the space. Don't turn your back on the person who just went — respond to them. Hype people up; the energy you give is part of the dance.
And the big one: you never have to go in. Holding the circle is a real role.
03 · Why it matters
Where freestyle becomes yours
Classes teach vocabulary. The cypher is where you actually speak it — in response to real music and real people. It's also where the healing side of hip-hop lives: being witnessed, as you are.
